The 2022 income tax season is expected to start on January 29, 2022 for 2019, 2020, and 2021 returns.
You can only claim income tax refunds within three years of filing or within two years of paying your taxes. There is a ten-year statute of limitations on IRS (and most states/localities too) on making additional tax assessments and collecting them which runs from the later of the filing due date or the date you filed for each respective year, but if you do not file for a year then reassessments and collections can go on indefinitely. So, you should file outstanding income tax returns even if you missed your opportunity to claim refunds, in order to stop penalties and interest from accruing indefinitely.
